Life in the Circus
It's a 132- year-old American tradition: the Ringling Brothers and Barnum Bailey Circus. Performers from all walks of life have hit the road to join the greatest show on earth. But is it all funny games under the big top? Ringmaster Kevin Venardos takes us on the job to show us there's more to this traveling extravaganza than brightly painted clowns and exotic wild animals.
"What do you do?" I'm the Ringmaster of the Ringling Brothers and Barnum Bailey Circus, and then they turn many heads like that. it's a great calling card, it's very unique. Ladies and gentlemen, children of all ages. I'm emotional ambassador and for the circus. I'm the guy who gives people in the audience permission to take an active part of what's going on on the floor. I'm the human link between the audience and the circus. You guys are ready to get crazy?
I said are you ready to get crazy?
I had no dreams of running out on the circus when I was a kid. It just, serendipitously came along into my life, and my life is 180 degrees from where I ever imagined it would have been at this time, and it's even better than I ever imagined.
Broadway and musicals were the thing that inspired me to start out on this journey, my life journey, you know. And it's what took me to school, and to study musical theatre, and, but, you shape your career with the opportunities you have, and not the ones you're just dreaming about. And this one, it just happened. This quite honestly might be the most dangerous stunt ever performed at the greatest show on Earth. I have adopted a new family.
There're 300 people that make the circus happen. And I'm with them almost 24 hours a day, 7 days
a week. We're the only constant of our lives, there's always a sea of people out there in the audience, but we look to each other for, you know, day to day emotional support, and keeping the energy alive, keeping the show a living thing, you know. When everything else is on the computer or television screen, it's one of the few things that is real. That we can give our kids, that 3 generations of people can all experience and enjoy together.
