The U.S. Commerce Department says soaring prices for food, gas, and other everyday needs pushed consumer spending higher than expected

Wall Street enjoyed an upswing Thursday, despite mixed economic news concerning consumer spending and jobless claims. The Dow Jones Industrial Average gained nearly 190 points to close at 13010. The surge in the stock markets comes as investors await a key report. VOA's Robert Raffaele has more.
