Seattle's Pike Place Market, in the northwestern U.S. state of Washington, is a product of necessity. A hundred years ago, consumers, fed up with the high price of onions, demanded a market where they could buy produce directly from farmers.

They got their wish, and the market on Pike Street corner today is a historic landmark and is known as "The Soul of Seattle."

It is as lively as ever, attracting more than nine million visitors each year.
