On Beauty

A young man sees a sunset and, unable to understand or toexpress the emotion that it rouses in him, concludes that it mustbe the gateway to a world that lies beyond. It is difficult for anyof us in moments of intense aesthetic experience to resist thesuggestion that we are catching a glimpse of a light that shinesdown to us from a different realm of existence, different and,because the experience is intensely moving, in some way higher. And, though the gleams blind and dazzle, yet do they convey a hint ofbeauty and serenity greater than we have known or imagined. Greatertoo than we can describe; for language, which was invented toconvey the meanings of this world, cannot readily be fitted to theuses of another.

That all great art has this power of suggesting a worldbeyond is undeniable. In some moods Nature shares it. There is nosky in June so blue that it does not point forward to a bluer, nosunset so beautiful that it does not waken the vision of a greaterbeauty, a vision which passes before it is fullyglimpsed, and inpassing leaves an indefinable longing and regret. But, if thisworld is not merely a bad joke, life a vulgar flare amid the coolradiance of the stars, and existence an empty laugh braying acrossthe mysteries: if these intimations of a something behind andbeyond are not evil humour born of indigestion, or whimsies sent bythe devil to mock and madden us; if, in a word, beauty meanssomething, yet we must not seek to interpret the meaning. If weglimpse the unutterable, it is unwise to try to utter it, nor should we seek to invest with significance that which we cannot grasp.Beauty in terms of our human meanings is meaningless. 　　

所有伟大的艺术都能启发我们联想到另一个天外的世界，这一点是不可否认的。有时大自然也具有这种力量。没有一个六月的蓝天会蓝得使你不联想到一个更蓝的蓝天，没有一片美丽的晚霞会不唤桓你心中更美的幻景，－－这是一个还没有被完全看清就已消逝的幻景而在它消逝时又给人留下了不可名状的向往和惆怅。但是，即使现实世界不是一个拙劣的玩笑，生命不是冷冷的星光中一点平庸的闪亮，而人生也不是穿过迷宫的一阵无聊笑声；即使存在于现实世界之外的这个神秘实体的种种启示不是由于内心不适而发出的奇想，也不是魔鬼用来欺骗和愚弄我们的怪念，换句话说，即使美确实有其意义，我们仍然不要试图解释它。当我们瞥见了无法用语言表达的东西时，如果硬要把它表达出来，这是不明智的，我们也不应该把意义强加于我们不能领会的东西。就人类所能理解的意义而言，美确实是无以名状的。
