Russians battle to save sailors trapped on sea bed

Moscow -- Rescuers battled worsening weather through the Arctic night into yesterday in feverish efforts to save more than one hundred sailors trapped in a crippled Russian submarine lying for nearly two days at the bottom of the sea. Interfax news agency said conditions had sharply worsened during the night, with heavy winds and choppy seas in the area of the disabled nuclear-powered vessel. Officials on Monday gave conflicting signals over the chances of saving the crew or recovering the craft. Russia has said the crippled submarine poses no threat to the environment. It was carrying no nuclear weapons and the reactor that powers its engines has been shut down. Norwegian officials said there was no sign of a radiation leak.

Los Angeles -- Chen Shui-bian landed in the United States despite Beijing's objections, kept his stay low-key in deference to the U.S. State Department, but still shook the hand of U.S. Congressman Dana Rockabacher who defied his own government. In a meeting with Richard Bush, the top U.S. representative on Taiwan relations, Chen urged the United States to play a more active role in cross-strait peace. He arrived for the transit stop at 3:40 p.m. Sunday U.S. West Coast time, after a flight of about 12 hours from Taipei, and left at about 7:30 a.m. Monday en route to the Dominican Republic, his first of six official stops.
