It is also told that Valentine's Day started in the time of the Roman Empire. Under the rule of Emperor Claudius II Rome was involved in many bloody and unpopular campaigns. Claudius the Cruel was having a difficult time getting soldiers to join his military leagues. He believed that the reason was that Roman men did not want to leave their loves or families. As a result, Claudius cancelled all marriages and engagements in Rome. But the priest St. Valentine secretly married couples contrary to the Emperor's order. Then he was imprisoned. After his death, he became the patron saint of lovers.

另外还有人传说情人节来源于古罗马。在克劳迪亚斯二世统治下，罗马发生了许多血腥内战，暴君克劳迪亚斯难以征集兵源补充自己的军队。他认为主要原因在于罗马男子不愿意离开他们的恋人或家庭。因此，他取缔罗马所有的婚礼和订婚仪式。但牧师圣瓦伦丁违抗了他的命令，暗中为情人们证婚，被关进监狱。死后变成了情人的保护神。。
