清楚表达自己的意思,让人了解自己的意思

I could not make myself understood in English.
我无法用英语表达自己的意思。

He tried speaking German to them, but couldn't make himself understood.
他试着跟他们说德语,但却无法让人了解。

A: What I told you is perfectly true.
B: You know, I'm from Missouri.
A: Are you? I thought you were from Illinois.
B: No, no. That's an American idiom which means that I'm suspicious until you show me the proof.

A: 我告诉你的完全是事实。
B: 知道吧,「我来自密苏里州」。
A: 是吗?我以为你来自伊利诺伊州。
B: 不,不。这是一句美国成语,意思是说我不见事实决不相信。

重点解说:

★ perfectly「完全的」

★ you know一语在口语中使用频繁,可置于句中、句首或句尾,以使语气委婉,或用来征求对方的同意。

★ be [come] from Missouri的意思是「不见事实决不相信」,亦即不轻信、不易受骗。"I'm from ~"是谈自己的出身地的实用句型,如I'm from Taiwan.意指「我来自台湾」或「我是台湾人」。Where are you from?「你是哪里人?」

★ idiom「成语,惯用语」

★ suspicious「怀有疑心的」cf. I suspect he did it.的意思是「我怀疑是他干的。」I doubt if he did it.则意指「我对是不是他干的怀有疑问。」注意suspect和doubt这两个字的用法差异。

★ proof除了指「证据」外,另有「防~」之意,如bulletproof(防弹),fireproof(防火),soundproof(隔音),waterproof(防水)。
