At the orthodontist's
Doc: You have a lot of teeth inside a small mouth, Luke.
Luke: Lucky me.
Doc: We're going to need to pull four teeth. You have what we call “fangs” on the top and bottom.
Luke: I can't sit through a four-teeth-pulling session without passing out, doctor!
Doc: It's the only way you'll have enough room in there.
Luke: Will I feel any pain?
Doc: Not until you wake up. The anesthesia is going to put you fast asleep.

★ Lucky me.
★ pull (v.)
★ fang (n.)
★ pass out 昏厥
★ anesthesia (n.)

Though no human population is native to Antarctica, about 1,000 people work there in the summer months, and another 12,000 tourists visit every year. They come to enjoy the unspoiled environment, the bright blue skies, and the fresh white snow fields. If a tourist is lucky enough, he or she can join an expedition to see some of the continent's other residents. Animals along the coast of the Southern Ocean don't mind the cold weather, and thrive in Antarctica's seas. Penguins and seals breed on the icy shores and fish for krill in the cool water.

It's time to close the chapter on this one.

对 话
Katherine: How's the new job going?
Noel: I've had enough of it. It's time to close the chapter on this one.
Katherine: I thought you'd love working in a bookshop. You get to read for free.
Noel: Well, I would if any of these books were in English. But this is a Chinese bookstore.

It's time to close the chapter on this one.(是时候结束这个章节),就是比喻是时候重新开始新的一页,或者说:Start afresh.(重新开始)/ Move on and do something new.(往前移动并做些新的东西),在生命中揭开新一页,英文可以说:A new chapter in my life。

It's time to close the chapter on this one,并以 ‘现在应结束这一章’比喻要辞职,凯思莲当然不会不明白。

We closed the books when we were sold out(货物卖光之后,我们就结帐)。引申 ‘结帐’的意思,to close the books on something / somebody就是‘终止某事 / 终止和某人有关的事’,例如:(1) It's pointless to pursue this matter any further. Let's close the books on it(这件事再研究也没有意思,我们就此算了吧)。(2) Following Mr. Chen's dismissal, the company closed the books on him(陈先生被辞退之后,他的事公司就算告一段落)。

和‘帐簿’相关的常用成语,还有to be in somebody's bad / black books。有些公司见顾客欠债不还,会把他们的名字写在专记坏帐(bad debts)的簿上;所以,to be in somebody's bad books即‘为某人所不喜欢’,例如:He was often late for work, and was in the boss's bad books(他上班经常迟到,老板对他没有好印象)。把这成语反过来说,就是to be in somebody's good books,例如:He is an apple-polisher. Of course he is in the teacher's good books!(他常常讨好老师,当然得到老师喜欢啦!)
