Grocery shopping the weekend before Thanksgiving
Gimi: Wow, looks like we made it just in time. It's packed in here.
Holly: Yeah, people always buy out the stores before the big holidays.
Gimi: Here're the turkeys. How big of a bird did you want to get?
Holly: Well, we've got about ten people coming to dinner. So the bigger, the better.
Gimi: All right, this one's the biggest. Are we ready to check out?
Holly: Not so fast, big guy. We haven't even started! I need everything on this list.
Gimi: Uh, can I wait in the car?

Does this current prominence of Eurasians represent a new acceptance, or is it merely a marketing twist on old racial biases? Many of the VJs on Channel V and MTV look racially mixed only because they have had plastic surgery to change their features. They say they feel pressured to look mixed because Western beauty is still the ideal to many people. Hopefully, in the future, this admiration and acceptance of those with multicultural heritages will deepen, and people will appreciate others, and themselves, regardless of their ethnic background.

He's a clock-watcher.

I only work nine to five. He's not dedicated to his job.

Kate: What are you doing up there?
Jackson: Putting all the clocks in the office back a half hour.
Kate: Why?
Jackson: Because of Gordon. He's a clock-watcher so now finally we'll get him to work overtime.
Kate: Well, Gordon's on annual leave. So all of us now have to work thirty minutes extra. Thanks a lot.

Gordon's a clock-watcher. I'm putting all the clocks in the office back a half hour to get him to work overtime.(戈登整天盯着时钟等下班。

Mr. Chen’s previous employer said he was not free from clock-watching(陈先生的前雇主说,他往往一到下班时间就闪人了)。

‘懒人’英文有一个很像中文的说法:lazybones(懒骨头)。 He is a lazybones who is always shirking responsibilities.(他是个懒骨头,经常逃避责任)。 (1) He shirked his homework to watch television.(他不做家庭作业而看电视)。(2) I shirked going to work on the pretense of being ill.(我谎称生病不去上班)。To shirk school是‘逃学’,to shirk work/duties是‘逃避工作/职责’。

To put/turn/set the clock back即 ‘把时钟拨慢’,常引申解作 ‘开倒车’;to put/turn/set the clock forward则是‘把时钟拨快’,例如:(1) We put the clock back/forward an hour.(我们把时钟拨慢/拨快一小时)。(2) The government's proposed electoral reforms are designed to put the clock back thirty years.(政府建议的选举制度改革,旨在恢复三十年前旧制)。
