Gary: What's on the box tonight?
Julian: I think the Manchester United vs. Real Madrid match is on at 9: 00pm.
Gary: Great! Let's go to my place and watch it.
Julian: Fabulous. I'll buy the beer on the way.

‘电视’英文除了叫television以及简称为TV/teevee和telly，俗语还称为the box、goggle-box、idiot box、the tube、boob tube等。Tube本是‘管子’，电视机有阴极射线管(cathode-ray tube)，所以叫the tube。Goggle是‘睁大眼睛看’，例如：He goggled at the beautiful girl（他瞪着那美丽的女郎）。Idiot则是‘傻瓜’，boob是‘傻瓜’的俗称，所以idiot box和boob tube都有贬义。I watched the soccer game on the boob tube即‘我在电视上看足球赛’。 问电视播映什么节目，你可以说What's on TV/the box/the tube tonight?（今晚电视播映什么？）或Is there anything (good/worth watching) on the telly this evening?（今晚电视有好节目吗？）等。问下一个节目是什么，英文是：What comes on next?/What's on after this?问一个节目什么时候开始，则可以说：What time does it start?问某电视台播映什么，可说：What's on Channel X?
要知道电视播映什么，最好是看电视节目表，这英文叫TV listing/schedule；较详细并附说明的电视节目指南，叫TV guide，例如：(1) Let's look in the TV guide to see if there's anything good（我们看看电视指南，看有没有什么好节目）。(2) The TV listing says there is a documentary about elephants at 8:30pm（看电视节目表，今晚八点半有一部大象纪录片）。假如电视上没有什么好看，你可以说：There's nothing good/worth seeing on TV just now。
