At dinner that night Dad: Howard, your mother tells me that you're staying up too late. Howard: I don't think so. I get enough sleep...like six hours a night. Dad: Grown-ups sleep six hours. You need at least eight or nine hours, just like your brother. Howard: Like Seth? He's a little kid. He needs more sleep than me. Dad: Seth could teach you a thing or two about listening to your parents. Howard: Ha! That'll be the day! Dad: Your bedtime is ten o'clock from now on.

★ grown-up (n.)

Like “Huckleberry Finn”, “The Catcher in the Rye” is a coming-of-age novel. It is written in the language of its time, yet covers issues that are still relevant to young people today. It is likely to retain its status as a thought-provoking, if somewhat depressing, read for quite some time.

I'm going to paint the town red.
对话 Harry: I haven't seen you for months. Where have you been? Brad: Working on a cruise ship. But I signed off this morning. I don't have to go back until September, so I've got two months off. Harry: You must have banked a lot of pay. Brad: A lot more than after my last contract. This time I saved as much as I could. Harry: What are you going to do tonight? Brad: What do you think? I'm going to paint the town red. Care to join me?
I have finally got a job, and am going to paint the town red tonight. If I come home late, don't stay up for me(我终于找到工作了,今夜要去狂欢一下,假如晚回家了,不用等我)。
去城中娱乐场所寻欢取乐,也可以叫out on the town,例如:(1) Our exams are over, so let's go out on the town tonight(考试都结束了,我们今晚到城中玩乐吧)。(2) They will be out on the town tonight(他们今晚会到城中玩乐)。(3) A night out on the town left me exhausted and sleepy(我在城中玩了一晚,疲倦得很,昏昏欲睡)。留意这成语常用动词go或be(或is、was等be的变体)带出,又out on the town通常是在晚上,所以a night out on the town这说法十分常见。 I signed off this morning。 (1) I signed on this afternoon, and will start work tomorrow(我今天下午签了任职合约,明天开始上班)。(2) Fed up with the office, I decided to sign off(我厌倦了办公室的一切,决定辞职)。
