Lorna: Yes, wasn't it great? All my favorite bands were playing.
Gayle: But I thought Cool Cream really stole the show.
Lorna: Me too. They're all so good looking.
Gayle: Yes, and their songs were so much better than the other bands.
Lorna: They're such good movers on the stage too. They drove all the girls crazy.
盖尔：有没有看昨晚电视播映的摇滚音乐会？

盖尔看了一场音乐会后说：Cool Cream really stole the show。成语to steal the show直译是‘偷了这场表演’，意思是‘抢镜头’，不限于说舞台表演，例如：The innocent charm of the bridesmaid stole the show from the bride（那伴娘天真动人，令新娘黯然失色）。To steal the show也作to steal the limelight/spotlight/scene。Limelight、spotlight都是舞台上照射某演员或某一点的聚光灯，scene则是‘场面’。It was the little known soprano who stole the limelight即‘抢尽风头的，是个鲜为人知的女高音’。In the limelight/spotlight可以用来比喻‘大众瞩目’，例如：Emerging victorious in the 1980 presidential election, Ronald Reagan stepped confidently into the global limelight（里根一九八○年竞选总统获胜，满怀自信的踏上世界舞台，举世瞩目）。
论歌手、演员的表演，今天中文有时用‘演绎’一词，例如‘他演绎这首歌非常出色’等。这‘演绎’显然脱胎于英文render一字。Render是‘翻译’，也可解作‘演奏’或‘演出’，例如：(1) This document has to be rendered into Chinese（这份文件须翻译成中文）。(2) Their rendering of the songs was so much better than the other bands'（他们比其它乐队更能演出歌曲的神韵）。Render的名词是rendition；假如不用动名词(gerund) rendering，可改用名词：Their rendition of the songs carried all the girls away（他们的演唱，令所有女孩子如醉如痴）。Carry somebody away是动词词组(phrasal verb)，有‘使陶醉’的意思。
